Where did you get the idea for the project? So, I decided, why not borrow from my own experiences? I also knew that I wanted to see my own kind of love story, which, of course, involves a deaf queer person as the hero. The beginning of the film pokes fun at some of the more absurd things people have said to you about your disability. And, no, we are not quiet during sex.

I started my online dating phase fresh out of a long-distance relationship with someone who was in the military, and had no plans of ever returning home he wanted to stay in Europe. Online dating is weird, entertaining, experimental and mind-blowing all at the same time. Eventually, I met someone online that I ended up dating for a little over two years. He was funny and a total beef head, from what I saw on his profile at 21 years old, that was attractive.
We messaged back and forth for a while and decided to meet up at a Chipotle, but not before I found out that he was deaf. My first thought was something like, there’s no way I can date a deaf dude; it was just so foreign to me. But knowing my spirit of always looking for something new and willing to learn something new every day, it wasn’t too far-fetched, so I thought.
We hung out a lot. Yes, they are all deaf. I wasn’t just stepping into a new world; I was thrown into the lion’s den. I picked up on some things quickly — thank goodness for the Internet and YouTube videos that helped me really learn how to move my hands, arms, body and face. I learned quickly that there are two forms of ASL: I was welcomed into the community and his family, and within a couple of weeks I was given a name-sign by his youngest sister.
Being given a name-sign from a deaf person is rewarding and earned, something that takes a long time to get if you’re a hearing person wanting to delve into the deaf community.

They were simply told I needed hearing aids, and that I would need to sit close to my teachers in my private school. I had only hearing friends. I went to sleepovers, swimming parties and get-togethers where everyone spoke and it was noisy. I struggled to understand what people said, especially when I had to take my hearing aids off for a pool party or when it was time for bed at a sleepover.
I had lots of good friends and I enjoyed hanging around them, but it was still work to catch everything they said. I used to pray that if I behaved well enough and was good enough, I would be fixed. Then, being deaf no longer meant that I was just different, but it began to mean that something was wrong with me. When I was 17, I started to get angry. I was tired of feeling like I could not be a part of parties and the typical teenage experience because it was too hard to hear.
I avoided loud, dark places and settings where it was difficult to read lips and match what little I could understand to what I could hear with my hearing aids. I was dating a hearing guy at the time. Most of the time, I just faked it by laughing along and smiling, but eventually, I started losing more hearing. When I was 18, I was turning in my car and signaled my blinker.
I Didn’t Identify As Deaf Until I Was 18. Then Everything Changed For Me.
I have been browsing through your forums at all the great information, and I thought I would post a question that has been bothering me for a while. I have a “crush” on a guy at my work who is deaf. Piutau’s calls for a relaxation in rugby’s eligibility rules must fall on deaf ears for the good of the game. Charles Piutau is calling for a chance to play for Tonga despite playing for the All Blacks 16 times. Reuters And rugby should also move quickly to tighten the laws that allowed some players to switch countries in the leadup to sevens’ Olympics debut in Rio last year. The last thing rugby needs is a farce like the just completed Rugby League World Cup which is pretty much a free-for-all when it comes to players choosing their countries.
And Piutau has got plenty. He knew the rules when he chose to play for New Zealand and turn out 16 times for the All Blacks. He knew the rules over eligibility, just as he knew of the earning power that All Blacks jersey holds for any star wanting to head offshore.
